Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully before using ToneReader.

1. Acceptance

By creating an account or using ToneReader ("the service", "we", "our"), you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use ToneReader. By using the service you represent that you meet this requirement. Users between 13 and 18 must have parental or guardian consent.

3. Accounts

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at our support page if you suspect unauthorized access.

You may not create accounts for the purpose of automated access, bulk scraping, or circumventing free-tier limits.

4. Free and Pro tiers

ToneReader offers a Free tier and a Pro subscription. Free-tier limits (character counts, document limits, flashcard limits) are described on the pricing page and may change with reasonable notice.

Pro subscription. Pro is billed monthly at the stated price via Stripe. You may cancel at any time through the billing portal; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. We do not offer refunds for partial billing periods unless required by applicable law.

We reserve the right to change pricing with at least 30 days' notice. If you do not accept a price change, you may cancel before it takes effect.

5. Your content

You retain ownership of any text, documents, and flashcards you create or upload ("your content"). By uploading content, you grant ToneReader a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, and display it solely to provide the service to you.

You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to upload any content. Do not upload content that infringes intellectual property rights, contains illegal material, or violates any applicable law.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the source code of ToneReader.
  • Use automated tools (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to access the service without written permission.
  • Attempt to bypass, disable, or interfere with security features or rate limits.
  • Resell or sublicense access to the service.
  • Upload or transmit malware, spam, or any content designed to harm other users or our systems.

7. Dictionary and third-party content

Definitions are sourced from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 3.0) and CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0). ToneReader is not affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation or the CC-CEDICT project. Dictionary content is provided "as is" — we do not guarantee accuracy or completeness of definitions.

8. Audio (Pro)

Audio is generated via Microsoft Azure neural text-to-speech. It is intended for personal language-learning use only. You may not use generated audio for commercial purposes, bulk download, or redistribution.

9. Intellectual property

ToneReader, its design, code, and original content are the intellectual property of ToneReader and its contributors. Nothing in these Terms grants you any rights in our trademarks, logos, or proprietary technology beyond what is necessary to use the service.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, ToneReader and its team shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or the service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $10 USD if you have not made any payments.

12. Termination

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or if we reasonably believe your use poses a risk to the service or other users. Where possible, we will give advance notice before termination.

13. Changes to the service and terms

We may modify these Terms at any time. We will notify you of material changes via the service or by email. Your continued use after the effective date of the revised Terms constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree to the changes, you may terminate your account before they take effect.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which ToneReader operates, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction, except where prohibited by local law.
